Multi hit is too boring. Combat is all about spacing and timing, and finding the right rythm for these two things. Also, even a few zombies mean quite the threat for a long while untill you level up a weapon skill. With multi hit on, the game turns into a hack and slash borefest, where even larger groups are easy to deal with from the get go.With multi hit you also get reduced exp with weapons. The setting assumes you're always hitting the maximum number of targets with a multi hit weapon. So if a crowbar only hits 2 enemies, you get 2/3 the normal exp because it could hit 3. But durability is still calculated assuming maximum target struck.

Multi hit is vastly overrated. With short blunt you can only hit like 2 max. Even with a long weapon you still are only able to hit like 3 at a time. Taking on a hoard is still very challenging. You still need zombies to line up correctly to take advantage of multi hit, and that can be a challenge.
Multi-hit should scale with weapon, fitness and strength skill levels. Remember in Zomboid you aren't a super hero, just a regular guy or gal trying to survive. I've done a lot of boxing and sparing with weapons including a quarterstaff and overall it just seems a bit too silly to be able to hit multiple foes with one strike (especially for just the average person).A bunch of the weapons don't have multi hit and it's nearly killed me several times. That and finding a boarded up house and most of the weapons are filled with scrap weapon drops instead of the usual good stuff. Not sure if it happens in Vanilla but besides the microwave hammer, you can find zombies impaled by scrap sledge hammers which is OPWeapon. The fishing rod can hit up to 2 enemies at a time (with multi-hit enabled), dealing a maximum of 0.3 damage to enemies (unless a critical hit) from up to 1.55 tiles away at an attack speed of 1.3.
