If I turn the fan speed up (with the outside air option LED lit) and press the snowflake (to kick on the compressor) it doesn't make the knocking noise. Trouble is, you cannot expect to succeed in this for over 10-year old car. Just continue driving the ticking car. Get rid of the car by selling it.
