Nothing else really plays like ToME; games with characters built entirely around cooldown-based abilities and items - the core of ToME - are fairly uncommon in the genre. Also even using a guidebook or wiki it's pretty unlikely that you'll have as perfect of information about enemies as ToME gives you.

Combat is far more engaging than in any other roguelike. The classes are more interesting as well. Yeah, it trades world variety for class variety. The levels in Maj'Eyal are pretty similar every time, and eventually you get into a bit of a routine with them, but the playstyle changes a lot based on the class you choose.
