Federal hst 9mm 147 vs 124.
This is best for guns with shorter barrels (ie conceal carry) vs the 147 grain standard pressure load. Either brand. I think Gold Dot tends to penetrate further and HSTs tend to get slightly larger expansion. I carry 124 grain HST, but honestly gold dots will work just as well.

I just wanted opinions on 124 grain 9mm vs 147 grain 9mm in terms of a defensive ammo. I carry and train with 124 grain Federal HST ammo in my every day carry gun but I'm in the process of suppressing a 9mm carbine. Since most 147 grain ammo is subsonic, it would make sense to use that in a suppressed carbine. My question was how effective is ...For self defense, you want light, fast, hollow points. Expansion happens far better at higher velocities. Yes. I have a few 9mm carbines and iirc. At 100 yds the difference between 115 gr and 147s is about 2". Over normal expected shooting ranges - ie, up to 10 yards - not much.

HST 147gr is going to give you better overall ballistics. Better penetration, better expansion, easier to handle recoil, etc. 147gr 9mm is subsonic so it's less flippy and less noisy than a +P round, as well as more reliable expansion since the bullet is a bit heavier and isn't travelling ridiculously fast.
