Should have saved that band backup. They were saying that without a NAND backup, you won't be able to get your 3DS working again, so it's now only useful as a paperweight. (If you haven't heard of a paperweight, it's something you put on top of paper to hold it down so it doesn't blow away. It's like calling something a brick.)
So quick little update. You were right that the 3ds wasn't bricked. I did follow 3ds.hacks.guide and boot.firm was there.
