The normal (as far as I know) black nickel saxophone finish is an extremely thin layer of actual plating, probably the thinnest of all platings used in sax finishes. It is just thick enough for a uniform layer of color, just barely thicker than a layer of 'tarnish'.

The tone, however, is nothing like that of either Yamaha, or Selmer. The tonal color is dark, and very different than any other modern tenor I've ever played.
