I only have four wires available at the thermostat today (G , W , Y , R). I used the PEK install guide [ R-> Rc ; G -> C ; W -> W1 ; Y -> PEK ] and the Ecobee4 powered up fine. I thought all was good until the temperature dropped and the heat just never kicked on. The most I felt was a light cold air blowing through the vents.

Communicating ones use a varying signal and communicate data like a computer. Legacy ones just use on/off signals.
