Most modern UniFi APs require 802.3af or 802.3at compliant PoE. This is 48 volt "active" PoE. As long as you stick with IEEE standard PoE adapters you should be fine. Watch for 1Gb PoE adapters as well. I think some might be limited to 100Mb. Before the Alien, I was using the Amplifi HD for 3+ years. Gave it to my parents and they have used it for the past 2 years without issues as well. My modems shit the bed before my Ubiquiti products do. You do have a point that the aliens been around for a bit. While we use a ton of Unifi hardware in our own security camera setup and love them, the lack of a PTZ hardware option from Ubiquiti inspired me to create a way to view standard RTSP streams in an existing Unifi NVR installation (not Protect) so I could live stream and record from a Hikvision device.

Biggest thing personally: Meraki APs will STOP WORKING if you stop paying your monthly fee to the cloud mothership. Aerohive access points are managed through the cloud, but are full linux boxes at each AP. If you stop paying to the mothership, you can still manage them individually.
