If someone has a much lower MMR rating than you and he kills you, you go down a lot in ranking. If you kill someone who has a much higher MMR rating, then your MMR ranking goes up a lot. It happens all the time. Like I just had a game where I placed two traps, pinged them both; had the first teammate run into the first set, killing himself of course. Soul Survivor does not match make based on MMR but it does slightly affect your MMR. If you want to track your MMR you can always use hunt players.com which lets you report each game and track MMR change.
