I also purchased an extended warranty through Lowes for an additional 5 years. (six years total) The ice maker stopped working. I filed a complaint with Lowes even though it was close to the expiration of the manufactures warranty. I have had 5 service calls through Lowes without correction of the problem.
A cleaning problem started a year before the warranty expired. I had this company out numerous times and they failed to fix the problem. Then the warranty ended, with the cleaning problem still not repaired. It is true that the protection plan is an extension to the manufacturer warranty but usually if you've already tried that route then Lowe's will issue you a credit to purchase a new one.
