The only difference is that Sharpshooter now applies the -5 to hit on the off hand attack as it should. I've barely noticed a difference. I miss a tiny bit more often when I don't have advantage on the attack. I'm sticking with dual crossbows.

Hand crossbows are martial weapons. Any class that either specifies hand crossbows or martial weapons proficiency can use them. There's no penalty to dual wielding except that your off hand weapons won't get your dexterity modifier added to the damage unless your class gives you the two weapong fighting style. 1.
but i used mine mainly for ranged dmg, went with assassin to lvl 5 and rest into gloomstalker ranger with dual hand crossbows and hes pumping out some good dmg. in act 3 you can get the bes melee weapon for dex users, a rapier that can use a bonus action to hit again if you want to go the other subclass that gives you another bonus action.So in my opinion op should respec to lvl 5 thief and 1 ranger at lvl 6. Thief doesnt really get anything at lvl 6 so getting true strike is good. I thought that the two weapon fighting would help but it turns out to be wrong.
