I too have a 990 tractor. And had a similar problem. After I raised the rear and rotated the tires, the left side was spinning freely. I pulled the left side axle housing and ended up replaced the pinion shaft. It cost me about $225 for the shaft. Plus some gasket cement and hydraulic fluid.
