Is the northstar v8 a good engine.
Nothing is perfect, and the Northstar performs beautifully overall, but isn't exactly a standout in terms of durability compared to any other engine. So it's hard to call anything "as good as xxx..." in terms of an engine, but the 3.6L is a great engine and is taking over where a new Cadillac started V8 was to begin, so all will get used to it.
Prior years relied on a "normal" 4.1 or 4.5 liter V8, which weren't noted for any real go power and were rated at just 170 and 200 horses, respectively. The LS4 is not the same engine used in the SSR or Trailblazers. It's a GEN IV engine, which should make it even better then previuc LS engines. The GEN III engine have proven to be very reliable and have good efficiecy. The piston slap was never a real big issue and oil consumtion issues were mainly from hard driving.
The 2008 CTS use sigma II profile that is very similar to sigma. The North Star engine should physically fit. you will need to use the 6L80 trans with metric bell housing found on STS-V. The 4.4 North Star uses a "closed deck" cylinder design. Head gaskets were not an issue.

The Northstar V8 actually predates the LS based engine by a solid 3 years, and it was more suited for Cadillacs FWD fleet at the time. It was also doing it's best to compete with European luxury and technology. Loved my 05 Bonneville GXP. Put 300xxx miles on that baby and never needed a head gasket.
