Tivo remote not working with new batteries.

No line of sight, no pairing. I removed the batteries and it worked. For about 3 seconds then it would stop again. Remove batteries, work 3 seconds, stop. I did a hard reset of the remote with the Tivo/Power button and at least now have it working as line of sight, which isn't viable because the tivo is inside a cabinet.My HD tivo has a strange problem. .
