It seems that both the 1301 and M4 are designed with the defensive/tactical shooter primarily in mind. Both companies offer models for hunters and clay shooters that are better suited to those tasks. The main difference between the M4 and 1301 seems to be inertia vs. gas within the realm of 3-gun competition and defense. Just my 2 cents. The 1301 is a tarted up tactical hunting model. Between these two, as others have stated, the main difference is the weight, the other difference is the M4 has two small gas pistons while the Beretta has only one large piston. The Beretta will cycle much faster than the M4 as well.
