AFR's website has their 400+ inch packages making 50 horses more. With EA3.0, the same package with 383 cubic inches is an average of 26#ft lower on torque and an average of 17 hp less.Feb 2, 2004 · Take care of these issues and a 406 will run just as well as a 383, but when you stomp the gas pedal you will feel the extra cubic inches the 406 has. 400 Pro s No if and or buts there is NO replacement for displacement: 350, .30 over, 3.75 stroke = 383 CI. 400, .30 over, 3.75 stroke = 406 CI. It cost about the same to build a 406 or 383. While you're still winding, the 406 has already shifted into the next gear. The 377 is more peaky while the 406 has a broad power band. The HP per cubic inch ratio doesn't really mean a whole lot since we're talking small blocks and the all weigh pretty close to the same. I've had both. My car is faster with a 406 than it ever was with the 377.

Other than a lot of expense, never noticed a difference in actual performance gains. the 6" rod 400 required a small base (.900) cam which was expensive. I have actually built a SBC 383 using the stock 400 5.56 rod and stock flat top 350 pistons from Mahle which have a shorter skirt design to clear the crank counterweights.

a 383 is a .030 over 350 with the crankshaft of a 400 small block with it`s main bearing journals cut down to fit the 350`s smaller main bearing saddles. so the bore and stroke is 4.030 X 3.750, this is why it`s called a stroker, since the stroke is longer. Since the stroke is longer it makes more torque. The 383 as must know is taking a 350 and putting a 400 crank. Both of the above replies are correct, since both the 350 and the 400 are on the same archetecture, once you take a 350 and put a 400 crank in it, it is just a bore difference form being a 400. In this example, the 6.00-inch rod requires a compression height of 1.133 inches (SRP's 6.00-inch rod pistons use 1.125 inches).

Those 5.7 LS1 engines had a bore of 3.898 and a stroke of 3.622 compared to a 4 inch bore and 3.48 inch stroke in a traditional small-block 350. To make a 383 stroker LS, which utilizes a 3.905 bore and a 4 inch stroke, you either need to hone an LS1 just a touch, or take a 5.3 and bore it out .125.
