Hi Guys, I have a 406 sbc in a 68 Firebird. The car runs 11.4 @ 118mph & I would think is somewhere in the 500-520hp area. Currenty it runs a 1.75" 4 into 1 header with 3" collectors into a twin 2.5" system through an X pipe then 2.5" Hooker Aerochamber mufflers dumped @ the diff.

i have a 406 small block in my 68 short bed with a few up grades to the engine and it pulls hard (i can spin the tires at 30 mph) according to john leinginfelder (iknow i spelled his name wrong) a well know engine builder. a 400 compared to a 383 with the same equipment the 400 will have 40 to 50 more ft pounds of tq. with the weight of our trucks we need good torque to cary the weight.

Both are 406 SBC with AFR 23 degree heads, one hyd roller the other is solid roller. Both are 10.4 to 1 CR and run fine on 91 octane at 2800 ft altitude. I don't spin them much over 7k RPM. Since the stroke is longer it makes more torque.

So from the seat of the pants feel, the 383 has 10% more torque. You could also get 10% more torque available at normal driving speeds by putting a 10% higher numerical rear gear in the back. Like going from a 3.36 to a 3.70. Or, by choosing the wrong gear, you could negate the advantage of the 383 vs. the 350.

Lots of options for the 383 from mild to wild, 400-500HP is easy to achieve, everyone offers a crate in those HP ranges.
